Many of the
tenets regarding Latter Day Saints and dating are due to the beliefs of the
church regarding the sanctity of its women. Women are stated to be the supreme
creation of God, created last just prior to God's pronouncement that His work
was complete and good. LDS dating takes cognizance of the fact that the woman is
to walk virtuously, and with understanding and who expects her body and herself
to be treated as a vessel of God's creative power.
LDS dating follows the principles which the Church holds regarding how women are
to be treated. The church leaders teach that disrespect, attention only to
physical attributes and none to the exalted roles which woman are intended to
play as mothers and wives, and disregard of the clothing and attitudes which set
women apart as feminine rather than masculine is a direct influence by Satan to
draw both men and women away from the truth of God.
Young women who are LDS dating young men are to keep the principles of feminine attire, behavior, speech and gestures according to the instructions provided in the teachings of the church.
LDS dating desires that each party is to assist the other in preserving the principles set out by God. Men are held responsible for encouraging young women in ways that promote her spirituality. In other words, a brother or father could complement the daughter or sister on good choices of attire. Young men are not to lead the woman to believe in any way that they are looking for immodest or sexually permissive behavior from the women they will choose for eternal marriage.
At the same time, women must resolve as well to maintain her standards of spirituality in spite of what she perceives as the wrong desires of the man. They do not realize the great gift they are squandering. Women tend to see themselves as of little worth, so that the greatest gift they gift is what makes them uniquely feminine.
Much attention
is given by church leaders to ensuring that the young women are treated
courteously, and tenderly as a sister. Young women should not be encouraged to
give up their conservative dress standards just to draw the mind the the young
men to lustful thoughts. The responsibility for a failure on the part of the
young woman to conduct herself chastely is to a large extent blamed on the men
not only of her own household, but the young men in a dating situation.
Because of the emphasis placed on the thoughts of young people and the importance of keeping them free of lustful thoughts, both young men and young women are urged to avoid any activities which would stimulate such thoughts and further actions contrary to the principles defined in the scriptures and in the pronouncements and writings by the leaders of the LDS church. This extends over into the marriage relationship itself.
