Latter Day Saints dating techniques may be a little behind those of their peer age group, simply because of lack of practice. Single adult males wanted to feel that interest was being communicated a little more directly.  They felt that a pat on the shoulder or a light brush on the arm to catch the man's attention and assures him that she doesn't feel a barrier between them.The young men felt as though unless the woman is communicating interest, she is communicating lack of interest.

 

LDS dating invitations don't rely on the type of sexual signals that are often sent out by their female peer group. For the woman, it may be enough to simply maintain eye contact, or maintain casual conversation.  This is a more subtle approach than many young adult women today who are not LDS would be using.  In fact, most women would not be convinced that it would work to catch a man's attention using this more laid back approach.

 

Non LDS women usually would not understand LDS dating strategies, just as a young woman who has been reared to never take the initiative might feel that such behavior is very bold of her. Even among LDS women, there are varying levels of LDS dating techniques. More outgoing women may feel comfortable showing this level of interest, but reserved women will have a much more difficult time.

A subtle approach for women is simply catching his eye and smiling.  If you do it several times, he'll realize it isn't just a coincidence.  Another common tactic for young women wanting to let him know she's interested is simply to make herself available casually, instead of always sticking with a clump of friends.

Even beginning in a strictly group setting LDS dating can be initiated by a couple who truly wants to make a window of opportunity.  The woman should be sociable  with others in the group and occasionally made the effort to be more approachable.  Men don't want to approach a group of women, because they don't want to be impolite to the others in the group, and because they don't want an audience if they are rejected by the woman.

The woman probably will be the one to make the effort to put a man at ease if he does approach her or her group.  Gentle humor or small talk will help to ease the tension and intimidation which he may be feeling.

Although men generally take the initiative in LDS dating situations, the young woman has a tremendous amount of control just in the way she expresses interest.By using eye contact, approachability, smiling, small talk and perhaps a touch or pat on the arm, the woman has more of an impact on the course of action than she may realize.

She is the one who can introduce new friendships and participate in social situations where new interests can be shared.
